Windows update makes safe USB removal as default protocol

Image
It’s one small step for man, and a giant leap for mankind – gone are the days where we fear of corrupted files due to unproper USB ejecting procedures. Microsoft have included in their latest  Windows 1809 update a change in how USB drives are ejected. With the Windows 10 update, the default removal procedure for USB drives will be set to “Quick Removal” which removes the need for the “Safely Remove Hardware” process, and allows you to unplug your device just like that. A report by MS Power User explains that there are two protocols that the OS can run when reading and writing on a USB drive – Quick removal and Better performance. The Quick removal policy makes it so that the system is always in a state that’s prepared to eject a USB drive , but at the cost of speed as Windows cannot cache disk write operations. Meanwhile, Better performance is just that – this policy caches write operations, making data transfers faster, but users must perform the

Linux Lite 4.4 is ready to replace Microsoft Windows on your aging PC

One of the best things about operating systems based on the Linux kernel is they can sometimes be very lightweight. Why is this important? Well, when an OS uses very few resources, it can breathe new life into an aging PC. In other words, just because Windows 7 or Windows 10 run like molasses on your old computer, that doesn't mean you have to buy a new one. The right Linux distribution can make your older PC feel fast and new. One of the most popular lightweight Linux-based operating systems is Linux Lite. Heck, the name of the distribution tells you that it is designed to use few resources! Version 4.4 is now available, and as per usual, it is based on the latest Ubuntu LTS -- 18.04. The Xfce desktop environment will feel familiar to those switching from Windows. Those new to Linux will also appreciate the easy access to many popular programs, such as Skype, Steam, and Spotify. Even the excellent Microsoft Office alternative, LibreOffice, is included. Jerry Bezencon, Linu

Google removes 85 dangerous apps from Android Play Store, check this list to ensure they are not in your phone

Google has removed a total of 85 malicious apps from Play Store after security researchers found these apps to be a disguise of an adware family. These apps were available in the form of game, TV, and remote control simulator apps on the Android Play Store. The issue was first reported by the security researchers at Trend Micro. "This adware is capable of displaying full-screen ads, hiding itself, monitoring a device's screen unlocking functionality, and running in the mobile device's background," said the researchers at Trend Micro in the blog. According to the blog post, these apps have been downloaded over nine million times from the Play Store with one of the apps named "Easy Universal TV Remote" has alone been downloaded over 5 million times. It is the most downloaded apps among the list of all 85 adware apps. The app also received multiple comments until the time it was available on the Play Store. Despite coming from differen

Reachability Cursor makes it easy to use tall Android phones One Handed [XDA Spotlight]

Every day, many developers post new apps or games on our Apps and Games forum.  There are so many apps released each day that finding a truly unique and fascinating app can be like picking a needle out of a haystack, but that’s exactly what we’ve done today. A developer on our forums came up with an innovative solution to the problem of using tall Android phones with one hand. Called “Reachability Cursor,” the app creates an on-screen cursor that you can drag to perform taps, long presses, and drag gestures.  The easiest way to understand the brilliance of this app is by watching a quick demo:   Smartphones from Huawei, Samsung, and Xiaomi have built-in one-handed mode features, and at one point, Huawei even tried contributing their one-handed mode feature to AOSP. We made an app that uses Android’s built-in overscan function to try bringing one-handed mode to any device, but Reachability Cursor takes a different, and admittedly better, approach to solve the
